Ann Zievers Branchini, Marquette University

Abstract

This essay presents the formulation of a conceptual framework of appetite, incorporating its psychosocial physiological aspects. Appetite, and its relationship to hunger, is addressed as it specifically pertains to hospitalized patients with a potential for nutritional alterations. An appetite assessment guide was developed from this framework and presented. Relevance of the concept of appetite to nursing, as well as recommendations for use of the assessment guide in practice and research are discussed.
