Abstract

The purpose of this essay was to compile from the literature an overview of the spiritual, psychological and psychophysiological facets of guilt and to propose nursing diagnostic defining characteristics and interventions for the care of clients with unhealthy guilt. The review of the literature produced myriad information due to the holistic conceptualization of unhealthy guilt. This information was organized into categories by means of the nursing diagnosis format of defining characteristics, etiologies, and interventions. The need for nursing research is discussed and it is concluded that the next step in the formulation of this nursing diagnosis of unhealthy guilt is its validation by means of participant-observation in a client population.
