Abstract

Four years ago an investigation began at Marquette University with the purpose of determining the value of alkyl chlorobenzoates as derivatives for alcohols in characterization work. The outcome of this initial investigation was the preparation of thirty compounds previously unreported in the literature, namely, the methyl through decyl, nonyl excepted, ortho- and para-chlorobenzoates, and 2,4 and 3,4 dichlorobenzoates. The method of preparation and physical constants of these compounds were determined by Mr. Robert Johnson who presented a thesis on the "Preparation of Alkyl Chlorobenzoates and Their Application as Alcohol Derivatives" in June, 1949.

A continuance of this investigation was undertaken two years later by Miss Joan Bardele, who endeavored to establish the purity of these compounds by determination of their saponification equivalents and chlorine content. The outcome o:f her work, whereby she determined the former, but reached no success with the later, has been reported in her thesis, "The Saponification and Chlorine Determination or Alkyl Chlorobenzoates to Determine Their Identity and Purity" or May, 1951.

The present investigation, which is intended as a final installment of the above efforts, will consist of a review of present analytical methods, and the selection of one which will be followed in the repetition of the chlorine determinations of these compounds. These results will be integrated, along with data already accumulated on these compounds, in a recapitulation or data which should be or service in probable publication or the entire investigation at a later date.
