Many and varied are the political, social, and economic problems facing the people of America today. Not the least among these questions is that of the population. The change of the country from a land of rural inhabitants to one of city dwellers, presents many challenging opportunities for study.

This thesis is written because of a desire and interest in doing some research work in the fields of sociology and economics. It is a study of the rural population and its trends in the United States, with stress being on the states in the Middle West.
