Abstract
ABOUT THE TALK: Robert McChesney addressed the crisis of a drastically shrinking print journalism industry and the role of media in today’s technological age. He noted the current contributors to the crisis and offered solutions to save journalism, which included government financial support for the benefit of an informed citizenry and the future of democracy.
ABOUT THE SERIES: The lecture was part of a series chaired by Bonnie S. Brennen, Nieman Chair and professor of journalism at Marquette. The Nieman Chair and lecture series are endowed in honor of Lucius W. Nieman, who founded the Milwaukee Journal in 1882 at age 24 and served as the paper’s longtime editor in chief.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Robert McChesney is co-founder of the media reform organization Free Press and a professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. McChesney is the author of several books, including Rich Media, Poor Democracy and The Problem of the Media. He’s also host of the weekly radio talk show Media Matters.
