Abstract

Hans Carossa is a most versatile, but not a prolific writer of the present day. He is essentially a lyric poet, and a poet of genius, though his gifts do not yield an abundant harvest. Carossa, however, is not less a lyric poet in his prose works. In his lyrics as well as in his narratives, there is a naive freshness and directness, and an understanding of human nature. The principal interest of this thesis is in the lyrics of Carossa more so than in his prose. His lyrical poems assure him a place among the really gifted lyricists of the twentieth century.
