Abstract

This study of the educational ideas of Erasmus has been undertaken with the full knowledge that his formal works on education have been already adequately treated. It was not the intention of this work, therefore, to simply restate material previously presented. In basing this study on the "Epistles" of Erasmus, we have used material not fully presented before in a development of his educational ideas. His account of his own experience in school, his personal reaction to actual conditions as he encountered them, and his interesting comments on many phases of fifteenth-century school-life, together with his statements of plans for ameliorating conditions, make the "Epistles" a source of much information.
