Abstract

That Gerard Manley Hopkins was a meticulous and far ranging critic of Coventry Patmore's poetry can readily be seen from his letters. On deeper analysis of these same letters it becomes equally evident that he was also deep and penetration in his criticism. The purpose of this study is to show these and other qualities in Hopkins' criticism, and to indicate Patmore's reaction to the Jesuit's suggestions.
