Abstract
History tells us that the nursing done in the early hospitals in the United States, a hundred years ago, was of the poorest possible type, excluding that of the religious orders. The non-sectarian hospitals were public institutions and most of the nursing was done by inmates or by the very poorest class of individuals, who could obtain no other work, and were compelled to earn a meagre livelihood in this manner. No one went to the hospital who could .afford to remain out of it, since the nursing service in the home was far better. Trained nurses did not exist, but women of humane tendencies and a natural aptitude for such work took it up and gave, on the whole, service much superior to that offered in the public institutions.
