Abstract

In the essay titles :Ethics of Method: Greasing the Machine and Telling Stories", Joyce Trebilcot describes an exchange with a fellow faculty member during the writing of her dissertation. Trebilcot was at Bryn Mawr College, struggling to finish her work, and she was thrilled, she says, when her colleague began to talk about what had motivated him in the writing of his own dissertation. But her excitement turned to disappointment when she realized that the kind of motivation he meant was philosophical, not personal, why the problem he wrote about was significant for the development of theory, not why it was significant for who he was or who he wanted to be...
