Education is a process through which all individuals are prepared for societal living. In the American culture, education is generally seen as a formal system, rather than informal. Theoretically, schools are organized in a sequential manner with each unit of instruction continuous into the next level, whether locally controlled, state or privately organized. The teaching profession is required to maintain itself above certain minimal standards. However, each institution is granted a large portion of freedom of operational and instructional structure within those standards.
