Abstract
The central issue for theology today is its involvement with reality, with life as it is experienced by man today. The Gospel message is a message for~ and is meant to be a saving message the good news about the meaning of life and the way to live it so as to attain happiness. This was basically the thrust of Rudolph Bultmann's existential theology -- that of bringing the Gospel into an immediate relation to man in the here and now of his present existence. This is what the new hermeneutics is all about. It is an attempt to respond to the quest for a method of insuring the relevancy of the evangelical message for twentieth-century man. As such, it is a search for a "proclamation which will on the one hand remain faithful to the word of God and on the other hand will allow the word to ring out in a way which does not by-pass the reality of his [man's] life.
