Abstract
In his illuminating book, Fiction and the Shape of Belief, Sheldon Sacks postulates a thesis that is designed to lead a reader to catch a glimpse at the ethical beliefs of the novelist as embodied in the novel itself. Generations of intelligent and sensitive men and women who have read and still continue to read Richardson provide cogent testimony that he somehow did include his moral beliefs, opinions, and prejudices in his novels without seriously detracting from their artistic effect.
