Abstract

The purpose of this study of the prose style of Margery Kempe is twofold. The first objective, treated in Part I, is to determine what elements constitute an effective prose style and to investigate to what extent Margery Kempe measures up to these standards. The second objective, handled in Part II, is to study briefly the peculiar characteristics of medieval English prose and to evaluate Margery's observance of and departure from them.
