Abstract
It was the primary purpose of this thesis to study Joan's character in all English plays on the subject; however, due to the vast number of plays written on her, at the suggestion of Dr. Hamm, it has been confined to the years 1798-1924. The bibliography includes all the plays written originally in English. Since this thesis concerns Joan alone, structure of plot, characterization, style, general tone and atmosphere will be discussed only in so far as these qualities effect her character.
