Abstract

A publication which is Catholic is in some way representative of the Church and runs the risk of involving the Church in its stands. The Commonweal, a weekly review of opinion, is known as a lay Catholic publication which does not involve the Church in its stands. The problem of this thesis is to determine the Commonweal's objectives and policies in order to decide how and how successfully it contrives to be Catholic and yet not involve the Church in the temporal order. The problem was introduced in a seminar in Catholic journalism in Marquette University's Graduate School by David Host, professor of journalism.
