Antoinette M. Balistrieri, Marquette University

Abstract

The purpose of this essay was to develop select outcome criteria for the Milwaukee Cardiac Exercise Therapy Program (MCETP), a phase III cardiac rehabilitation program (CRP), cosponsored by the American Heart Association and the Young Men's Christian Association, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Cardiac rehabilitation, as a part of the total care of the patient, was reviewed, particularly in regard to exercise and education. The expanding role of the nurse in cardiac rehabilitation was also reviewed and discussed. Phase III CRP'S, in terms of goals and objectives, organization, and components were described. Specifically, the MCETP was reviewed. Select outcome criteria, physiological and psychological, based on other evaluations and studies, were then suggested for the MCETP.
