Abstract

Nonlinear differential equations which govern the large deflection of thin shallow sandwich shells having orthotropic cores are derived in this thesis. A solution to these equations is discussed and a sample application is presented. The load-deflection relationships for the sandwich shell with orthotropic or isotropic cores are plotted and tabulated. Comparisons are drawn between these deflections and those of a similar sandwich shell with core rigid against shear deformations and those of a shell with thickness equal to that of the facing of the sandwich shell.
