Abstract

The use of Hydraulic Telescopic Cylinders is becoming more prominent in today's industrial picture. In the past, very little documentation on column loading of hydraulic cylinders has been available to the public. Most cylinder manufacturers have developed "in house" emperical [sic] formulas which they acquired from past cylinder performance. This thesis introduces a computerized finite element method in analyzing column loading which is confined to the elastic range and is compared to the energy and differential equation method. Test data is illustrated to verify the foregoing methods. Descriptions of various types of cylinder designs are also shown as well as the various loading restrictions. The author hopes that the information documented in this thesis will be a basis for future exploration into the field of inelastic buckling on Hydraulic Telescopic Cylinders.
