Abstract

With declining hardware costs, the trend in research is towards decreasing the high cost of software. It is widely estimated that software maintenance accounts for one-half of the total software dollar. This essay is an overview of the current state of maintenance, and provides guidelines for controlling the activity. Software complexity metrics are presented as practical tools, for maintenance cost estimation and for quantifying program characteristics that are difficult to maintain.
