Abstract

Boncyk in his research on potentiometric titrations, made the observation that apparently mercurous nitrate could be used to titrate chromic acid solution. He used potassium iodide as an outside indicator and found that a slight excess of mercurous nitrate gave a gray precipitate with potassium iodide solution. The precipitate seemed to indicate the end point, or the neutralization of the chromic acid; a slight excess of the mercurous nitrate causing the immediate formation of a gray precipitate. Not knowing the exact normality and purity of the solutions used, he could not ascertain whether the gray was the true end point, or due to impurities present.
