Abstract
On December 29, 1809 there was born in No. 62 Rodney Street, Liverpool a man who in later years was called by some Englishmen, a devil, and by others, an angel, depending on their political view points. William Ewart Gladstone was the third of six children, a descendent of an old Scottish family, the Gledstanes of Gledstanes. He was born at a critical moment in the fortunes of England and of Europe.
