Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to discover whether a reader of The New York Times during the year 1937, could with a certain degree of confidence prophesy an impending general war on the continent of Europe. Precisely how was The Times informing its thousands of readers of the various crises and events of extremely critical nature transpiring in the world during the year? Did the foreign correspondents of The Times in the various key spots of the world give to their readers any genuine basis for believing a world catastrophe was in the offing? Stated briefly, could the reader of The Times during 1937 see an approaching European maelstrom, baaing his observations and reasons for his belief on the subject matter found in the paper?
