Abstract
Fortunately for the young child as well as for society we have evidences of the growing appreciation of the educational possibilities of early childhood. This is manifested in the opportunities provided by universities for the training of teachers of childhood. Teachers College, John Hopkins, Yale, Harvard and the universities of Iowa and Columbia offer research courses in this particular study.
In 1905 a conscious attempt was made to work out a technique of teaching built upon a new conception of the teacher as a guide rather than as a dictator, but few were interested, so the attempt was not revived until 1915 when conditions in the Horace Mann School of Chicago made possible the venture.
Much wider interest was shown and since then a still wider and more tolerant recognition has been given by society.
