Abstract
I shall attempt to show, in this thesis, the importance and· feasibility of pre-primer reading as an adequate foundation for primer reading. While pre-primer reading has taken an important place in the curriculum during recent years, there has been an ever-increasing interest taken as to its value, especially to children of low intelligence and to foreign children. I have obtained my references, to a large extent from William S. Gray and Laura Zirbes in their article on Primary Reading which appears in the Class Room Teacher Volume II, and also from articles on reading which are given in The Twenty-Fourth Year Book of The National Society for the Study of Education by the authors given above. Charles J. Anderson and Isobel Davidson in their book, Reading Objectives, have also presented some very helpful material as regards this particular phase of reading. These authorities have given much time and study to introductory reading, and know the child mind, consequently they present the subject in such a way so as to assist the teacher in awakening in the child, the love for reading which should be paramount in the lives of children.
