Abstract

Communism as an ideal for human society is a dream that many a philosopher has cherished and striven for. Some there were who theorized upon it, who sought to circumvent and direct the passions and activities of human nature by artificial barriers towards what was better and truer, though themselves holding aloof and leaving it to others to conduct the experiment; and some there were, who boldly led the way in person, setting an example to the followers they had gained; some again there were, who held the neutral role of spectators at a drama, observing the experiments made, observing sympathetically it may be, . encouraging the dream and ·the dreamers by advice and assistance, though all the time feeling within themselves the hopelessness of the attempt, doubting the outcome, yet lending it what aid they might to make. it favorable. The Brook Farm experiment has passed into history; the dreamers who dreamt the dream, the great names who gave it sympathy and aid, the names of those who doubted, yet helped, all are gone: Shall we reckon among the latter the name of Margaret Fuller? Did she truly believe in the possibility of the Brook Farm ideal? Or did she, half despairingly, lend herself to it in lieu of something better, half hoping, unable to invent a happier plan, and wondering if perchance it might not after all prove itself a workable scheme?
