Abstract
The original draft of the Constitution of the United States did not mention freedom of the press. The guarantee is among one of the ten forced into the document by Thomas Jefferson. Yet even Jefferson could not go to the length of affirming that freedom of the press is "an unalienable right, an absolute good, comparable to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.'' What he said was merely that Congress should make no law abridging it. This does not mean that it should never be abridged, only it is a denial that Congress is the authority by whom it is to be abridged.
