Abstract
A brief study of the countless ages covered by the development of writing from its most primitive state to that employed by the nations of today, and how our own alphabet has reached such a high stage of development through the slow but steady improvements made by our ancestors may help us to realize the importance and great magnitude of this heritage and inspire us to teach it to our children in such a way as to give them "a common understanding of the past and a vision of the future." It may help them to know about the thoughts and achievements of great men and women of the past. When we can realize this, the well- known saying, "The pen is mightier than the sword," will take on an added significance.
