Abstract

In this thesis, "The Economics of Housing Projects", I have tried to bring together analytical material in relation to representative methods of relief for the crowded and wretched conditions of the working classes. Various systems have been tried in many countries and both England and Germany are far in advance of the United States in this experiment. It was impossible to examine every type of project in this study so I have confined myself to several types in the United States. I have also examined Vienna's experiment in post-war reconstruction since it has been called, by authorities on the subject, the model of all projects. The study of the wartime attempts of the government, the working experiments of Kohler, Wisconsin and Radburn, New Jersey, and the improvement of housing conditions effected by the New York state Legislature is enlightening in its revelations of the many elements to be considered in the problem. For general information on the problem I have drawn upon "Housing, and the Housing Problem" by Carol Aronovici and "The New Day in Housing" by Louis H. Pink. The bibliographies for specific material follow each chapter.
