Abstract
This thesis 1s concerned with the nature of the action of the lowering of the melting point of the various natural waxes by the addition of Halowax. The problem was suggested by the work of Louis Kroening in his thesis, "The Effect of Halowax 1012, 1013, and 1014 on the Melting Points of the Various Waxes", and also by that of Joseph M. Sevenich in his thesis, "An Investigation of Halowaxes in Trinary Wax Mixtures". The former showed conclusively that the presence of Halowax in a wax mixture invariably lowered the melting point of the natural wax. The latter showed the same effect of lowering the melting point of waxes in trinary mixtures of natural waxes and Halowax. In contrast, George J. Hable showed in his thesis, "A Study of Melting Points of Various Binary Mixtures of Waxes", that the melting points of the mixtures always lay between the melting points of either pure wax. This present work seeks to give some Indication as to the nature of the lowering effect of the Halowax on melting points of natural waxes through the application of some of the more common chemical tests in order to indicate whether the action is physical or chemical. A further study Is made of the graphs of the Halowax-natural wax mixtures in order to present a clearer picture of this action.
