The spirit of service to the sick is not new. The care of the sick has been an unfailing expression of human endeavor since the early churches recognized that the care of the bodies as well as the souls was of prime duty. Hospitals and nursing orders were established as a practical expression of religious zeal that typifies unselfishness. In our modern hospitals there are many persons who recognize that the patient's needs are not entirely physical and therefore contribute their share of cheer and comfort to the sick. We find that volunteer committees of women have for years visited patients in the wards and extended their friendly offers. Doctors and nurses have also done countless acts of kindness. Thus, we see, that the patient's spiritual needs and his dependence on sympathy and affectionate interest have long been recognized both in theory and in practice.
