Abstract
The practice of dentistry was, formally divided into three departments, viz: operative dentistry, mechanical dentistry and oral surgery. Operative dentistry included the extraction of teeth (sometimes classed as surgery), all procedures for the preservation or regulation of the natural teeth, and the placing of crowns on natural roots. Mechanical dentistry included the supplying of substitutes whose roots as well as crowns had been lost, the making of splints for broken jaws, obturators and vela for cleft palates, and appliances for regulating teeth. The term "mechanical dentistry" was used for all those appliances made in the laboratory for use in the mouth which are readily removable or only temporarily fixed.
