Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to show the true worth of Walter Pater as a literary critic, to trace the elements which entered into his literary judgements, and to give an appreciation of his representative literary criticisms. In an attempt to criticize a man's critical work it would be foolhardy to say the least, to omit a discussion of the man's philosophy of life, especially of a man of Pater's peculiar and somewhat paradoxical temperament. I have therefore opened this study with an analysis of Pater's philosophy and followed it with a study of his style--assuming that his view of life and his conception of style play a very prominent part in determining the shape and contents of his writings.
