Abstract
Anyone who studies classical literature must have a knowledge of mythology. Without this it is almost impossible to read and understand the ancient Greek and Latin authors. Many books have been written on the mythology of the ancients, but in my research work I have never found one that has been entirely devoted to a comparison of the mythology of the Iliad and the Aeneid. It is to offset this that I have undertaken to write this thesis. To claim, though, that this is the only work of its kind would be presumptuous. In this thesis, I have used as my sources the 1liad, both Greek and English versions, the Aeneid, both Latin and English versions, and some books dealing with Greek and Roman mythology. After having made notations of all the passages in the Iliad and in the Aeneid that were in any way concerned with mythology, I then choose those which most vividly brought out a comparison between the two. However, in some cases there were marked similarities, and a few of these have also been included. The scope of this thesis includes the major gods and goddesses only, ana to attempt to include all would be a greater task than this thesis calls for.
