Abstract

In the past few years, the problem of the gifted children has been more thoroughly investigated than formerly. The experiments pertaining to the unfortunates--the delinquent and the feeble-minded--have been numerous, but the experiments dealing with the more fortunate have been neglected. This unfortunate neglect of the gifted has been due to the tendency of people to notice whatever gives them pain or annoyance. These problems were studied and experimented with; but the gifted children at the other end of the scale were neglected. The idea in teaching was to lift up the lowly end so there would not be such a great difference in work. In later years people became interested and concerned; the result was several funds for the education of the gifted. In 1918 the Board of Education established a school for investigation at Urbana, Illinois. In New York a psychologist. was given the opportunity to work in one of the schools. In 1923, Dr. Terman in California made his extensive study of genius. Stanford University also made a study of the gifted. Material in this thesis has been used extensively from these sources.
