Abstract
It is the purpose of this thesis to attempt to show how Alexander Pope through his critical and literary principles put new life and vigor into English verse. He may not be a poet of the first order, as some of his critics would have us believe, but he undoubtedly was exactly the poet his age required. That age needed discipline as a restorative after the anarchy of the previous century, that Pope succeeded in bringing order out of well-nigh chaos even hie enemies concede.
