Abstract
The purpose of the experiments was threefold; first, that teachers might have an opportunity to discover the actual conditions in their own class rooms in comparison with statements of writers on education; second, that, in trying out recommended procedures, they might acquire a desire to investigate and develop a scientific attitude toward their work; third, that a more wholesome respect for the opinions of scientific investigators might obtain. The subject of reading is of such fundamental importance and has occupied so prominent a place in the field of investigation that it seemed reasonable to treat it in discussions in teachers' meetings and follow these with experiments.
