Abstract
Louis IX was born on April 25th, in the year 1215. He was the grandson of Philip Augustus and the son of Louis VIII and Blanche of Castile. Thus we have the Capetian blood coursing in his veins, endowing him with bravery and fearlessness. Louis* father inherited the throne of France from Philip Augustus and ruled for a scant three years before death claimed him. Louis VIII carried on the policies of his predecessor. Under their reigns, royal power grew, colleges, schools and churches were built; the nobles were humbled and the royal domain increased. In fact some historians credit Philip Augustus as being the first of the French kings since Charlemagne, who displayed a genius for order, reform and royal independence. However, St. Louis was to surpass his ancestors as rulers, not only in gaining and carrying on temporal works but also in attaining the spiritual. It was due to his untiring and energetic leadership that France again became the leading power In Europe and that the dynasty founded by Hugh Capet reached its highest peak. St. Louis possessed all the natural qualifications of a great leader. He had physical strength, a keen intellect, courage to uphold his convictions and a love of God. With these qualities, he was destined to become a good ruler, a great warrior, and a saint. Louis was all of these and his name will always remain in history as such.
