Abstract
The forming of habit and the molding of character are the chief tasks of the character builder. In childhood the trainer makes character to a large degree; during adolescence the youth makes himself. In childhood habits are formed by the unreasoned processes of reiteration; during youth they are made by the voluntary acceptance of an inner-urge, and the conscious nurture of that urge. For the child habit-making must be as unconscious as breathing; for the youth it should be his deliberate and high-born duty. A wise person will never talk habits to children; but before they know it she will have them free as the wings of a bird in the unconscious regulation of their lives.
