Abstract
The earliest action that has been suggested as the beginning of the play movement in the United States is the provision or the New England town commons which dates from the early part of the Seventeenth Century, the Boston Commons having been established in 1634. Although there is abundant evidence that these commons have been used for play by each succeeding generation of boys since colonial times, these cannot be termed playgrounds, since the spaces were originally provided for pasturage and their utilization for municipal recreation came later.
