Abstract
Miracles are the badges which identify the ambassadors of Jesus Christ on earth, the King’s signet by which we may know that its bearer speaks Divine Truth. They surpass human power, they must come from God, and therefore if they are advanced in confirmation of any claim, or in proof of any truth. th®t claim must be valid and that truth must be certain, because it is approved by God Himself, who can neither deceive nor be deceived. Now Christianity offers miracles as one of its undeniable credentials. In fact, were it not for that greatest of all miracles, the Resurrection of Christ, the whole value of Christianity as a divinely revealed religion is at once and forever destroyed. ”If Christ be not risen from the dead, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.” (St. Paul to the Corinthians, XV. 14) To deny the possibility of miracles, then, is to destroy the possibility of proving the truth of the Christian religion. As a Christian I shall endeavour to offer philosophical and historical proofs of the possibility and actual occurrence of miracles, using the teachings of the Catholic Church when necessary but submitting all proof to philosophical and historical standards of credibility.
