Abstract
The declaration of the Open Door Policy came after the period when Russia, France, Great Britain, Japan and Germany all vied with one another for concessions. It was a policy to open the so-called ’’spheres of interest” which till this time the Powers had held in China and to put all nations on an equal "basis. In reality it did not mark the opening of China’s door, for while China was content and at peace with the world, the "beauty and richness of her silks and chinaware were causing envy in the West and the Chines had come to realize that the Open Boor, with its equality of privilege was a far "better "bulwark to their government than a door open to some nations and closed to others. It was clear that with commercial equality among all nations China would "be able to find protection "behind the conflicting pretentions of the Western nations.
