Abstract
Alsace-Lorraine has been a disputed, territory since the dawn of history,—fought over by Gaul and Teuton, incorporated in the Roman Empire, conquered by the Francs, lost to the Germans, retaken by France in 1648, torn from her by Prussia in 1871, and finally, in 1918 restored to France as a result of the allied victory in the World War. Such in brief is the history of a people victimized by rivalry between races and sovereigns. It is our purpose here to follow out the above outline a little more in detail, to show how the disputed territory was a major cause in the Great War, and then to look at the situation as it is to-day. France now has Alsace--Lorraine and France is satisfied. Since 1871 all her policies have aimed at the restoration of this territory, but to all Frenchmen, and to the world, the question should not be is France satisfied, but rather are the inhabitants of Alsace—Lorraine satisfied.
