Abstract
A representative bock cannot be considered apart from the age it reflects.
"All great writers, are in a very real sense, the products cf the age of which they are the children; their work is modified and their range is limited by the sentiments and opinions prevalent in their time." Especially is this true of Tennyson, for most all writers who treat of him intelligently express in some form or another the opinion that Tennyson is representative of his age. But we wish to call that especial period he so peculiarly embodies in "In Memoriam" as the era of the Victorian Compromise. It is just this point that few phrase. The most memorable treatment is found, in Chesterton's "The Victorian Age in Literature", another may be found in two essays by Paul Elmer More in "Shelburne Essays, volume VII; another in chapter XXII of "The Political and Social History of Modern Europe," volume II, by Carlton Hayes. Outside of these three little can be found except perhaps a page here and a paragraph there, but that is all.
