Abstract
When the French people, in 1789, burst out in fury against the existing order of things, in what is known as the French Revolution; when they carelessly flung crowned and noble heads hither and yon, and in their rebellious passion thoroughly wrecked the old social, religious, and political systems, substituting "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity" for them, all Europe looked on, horrified and amazed. Her, hitherto, complacently "divine" monarchs plucked neverously [sic] at their crowns, and deadly terror hung onto their thrones.
