Abstract

The circulatory system of the vertebrates is one of the most important found in the animal kingdom. The reason being that it carries food, oxygen, and hormones to all parts of the body and also removes all types of waste materials. this system involves a pump-like apparatus, called the heart, to which are attached tube-like vessels called arteries and veins. A liquid called a fluid-tissue circulates in this closed transportation system which is said to be closed in order to distinguish it from a semi-closed or open system in which a sinus or tissue cavity separates certain arteries and veins. In the vertebrates this fluid-tissue is known as the blood, the liquid or fluid portion is called the plasma, while the tissue consists of a group of separate cells called erythrocytes and leucocytes.
