Abstract
“Today too many patients who brave the ordeal of having tee.th treated, later lose the teeth because of infection." This statement by Dr. Meisel of Pittsburgh before the Pennsylvania State Dental Society strikes at the cause of the failure of many root canals and their unpopularity among so many members of the dental profession. Sir William Osler said :-"Before antiseptic surgery, bacteria were more deadly than bullets." During the first week of April, 1927, the hundredth anniversary of the birth of Sir Joseph Lister, the father of antiseptic surgery was celebrated. Lister is credited with having saved, by his discoveries, more lives than had been lost in all the wars of the preceding one hundred years.
