Abstract
It is the purpose of this thesis to develop the function of a critic as conceived by Samuel Johnson; to develop his theory of literary criticism as discernible from the facts of his life, the Rambler Essays, Rasselas, The Lives of the Poets; and to show those things which most influenced him in choosing the standards which were to be the basis for his system of criticism.
