Abstract

It is the singular custom of that modern playwright to feel most keenly the social problems of the society in which he lives. Truly the drama is a representation of life, but as we have come to know the great models that have survived the criticism of years, we notice that it has dealt most primarily with a representation of character that is a universal and living representation of life rather than with the problems of the political and social scientist. Yet we are aware that the stage of the present day is not that of a Sophocles or a Shakespeare but one- dominated by a man from the North who presented the first problem of individualism when Nora Helmer slammed that famous door in "The Dolls House." Prom that time on our society has still had its problems but it has likewise not been left unaware of them, at least that portion of it that has attended the theaters that attract the attention of the literary critics.
