Abstract
Eminent authorities are not agreed as to the origin of American literature. Some credit John Smith with contributing the nucleus to native literature, others maintain that the North American Review gave the first impetus to letters, still others make the history of American letters synonymous with the establishment of the Atlantic Monthly. These divergences of opinion exist not because the production of works is denied, but because critics do not ascribe the same relative merits to these productions, however evidence reveals the fact that American authors have been in¬ separably associated with American magazines, hence the history of American literature is the history of the American magazine.
